One audience member wears a shirt with the end of the Meyer's High School Alma Mater on it during a meeting at which the School Board discussed the feasibility of closing the school

    UPDATED 7:15. p.m

Public comment ended at a meeting about the fate of Meyer's High School with many audience members rising and singing the Alma Mater of the school.

The last person to speak, Stanley Kowalski lead the recitation, ending with voices rising and feet stomping with the last line: “On though life, in our hearts we will cherish, steadfast forever, Meyer's High.”

Others who spoke praised the school.

Melissa Strother said she is a parent of a student attending Kistler elementary and her son will likely be attending Meyers. She said “there are way more factors than what it will cost,” including declining property values and the loss of an historic building. She warned she will not send her students to Meyers if she goes to orientation and sees water leaking into buckets.

Richard Holodick, a Meyer's graduate has frequently commented on the school board actions regarding schools and curriculum, said he “admires Superintendent Namey's decision to do an internal study,” but said a study of the entire district is needed, not just Meyer's.

“This is a very, very difficult task that you face,” Holodick said, noting he worked in several districts that closed schools. He said Harrisburg spent $1.5 million studying schools. As he has in the past, Holodick offered his assistance and expertise as a long-time educator in various places to the district as it makes this decision.

Holodick said he started out offering help as “payback” for the education he received, but that “now it's a prayer” because of the value of the school system.

Shawn Walker said there will be “less of an individualistic feeling” if the schools were merged, noting he has coached junior high basketball in the district. “Of those four or five months out of the year, I might be the only father figure some of these kids have.”

A 1994 Meyer's grad, Walker said “I learned a great many things” from the school, adding that he still sees teachers and coaches who helped him in school. He talked of the “life philosophy he learned at Kistler Elementary when he was 12, and a coach told the team they had great potential but it means nothing if you don't reach it. “Help these kids reach their potential,” he said.

Kowalski finished the evening with the Alma Mater.

At the end of public Comment, Toole said no vote was planned tonight, and that she doesn't see a vote on the fate of the schol coming up any time soon. She noted an ad hoc committee is reviewing “all of our schools.”

    UPDATED 6:53. p.m

A student was the first public member to speak. He praised the grandeur of the building, noted it has problems but so do the other schools, and warned that gifted students would go to private schools rather than enroll in one of the other district high schools.

Attorney Kim Borland, who heads the school's speech debate team called the presentation tonight “an example of putting the rabbit in the hat.” meaning the desire to close the school drove the decision to have a study. Borland also noted Meyer's accommodates students who want to walk to the school, and said that contributes to the sense of community, as well as making it easier for them to participate in things like the debate club.

Robin Shudak told the board the building is an anchor of her neighborhood and that closing it would create a large vacant structure. She cited studies that show large schools may not be the best way to educate students and she asked for concrete numbers on costs of closing the school. She also warned a large school would develop “very divided cliques.”

Amy Kennedy, a Kutztown University faculty member who spoke at the July meeting, asked the board to think what is best for the students, arguing it is better for students to be in local schools they can walk to, and said studies show there is greater violence in larger schools.

Alisha Kravabloski cited cold schools, classes where rain dripped through ceilings, and bed bugs as concerns the board needs to address before taking on monumental changes like closing a school.

Michael O'Donnell, a “proud 2001 graduate” of Meyer's asked “when will the preliminary studies of our other schools take place?” Saying it wasn't a threat, O'Donnell held up the blue “school code” book, the state law for schools, and said lawyers who graduated from the school would hold the district “to the letter of the law” in the book.

Scott Jones said the school is a close knit community school, “The Mohawk Family, a family that will not be broken. And if there is a fault with the family, you fix the family.”

Wilkes-Barre City Councilman George Brown, a Meyer's graduate who represents district A in the city, which includes Meyers, said the district needs a Master facility plan. he asked how a closing will affect students academically, and how it would impact special educations students.

Brown questioned how public safety will be impacted in the neighborhood if the building is closed and boarded up. “I hope it doesn't become another Hotel Sterling,” he said, referring to the downtown landmark that is slated for demolition despite $6 million spent in an effort to save and develop it.

Stephen Barrouk, the former head of the Greater Wilkes-Barre Chamber of Commerce, said that, as a realtor and former president of the chamber, he has worked with people relocating into the area. he said many look to suburban locations first. “My concern is if you close the school we are going to have serious ramification in our ability to atttract more residential families into the city.” He warned of flight into the suburbs if the school is closed.

“If you start eroding the tax base by taking away” the hub of neighborhoods will cause greater financial problems in the future.

“Meyer's High School is the queen of the prom,” Barrouk said, referring to the sudden prominence the shool took in talk of restrucring. But Barrouk pointedly asked Board Membere Phil Latinski, who had launched the debate about closing the school iast June, why “Meyer's High School in particular is the queen of the prom.” Barrouk offered a complaint echoed by others, saying a regular mainenance and building improvement plan would have prevented “this situation.”

Luzerne County Judge William Amesbury, also a Meyer's grad, said the people were here “to show you who and what Meyer's high School is. Meyer's is not simply a building located on Carey Avenue, but it it is part of the substance and soul and the fiber of those who have walked through it's halls.” He noted grads include doctors, lawyers, “superintendents, and yes even judges of the Court of Common Pleas.” Namey is a Meyer's graduate.

Amesbury said he was “extremely disappointed” that two board members did not come to the meeting. “The worst thing that can happen to a community is to walk away and feel their interests have not been heard.

    POSTED 6:19 p.m.

Wilkes-Barre Area Superintendent Jeff Namey opened a special School Board meeting to discuss results of an internal study on the feasibility of closing Meyer's High School by recounting the purpose of the study: To find out “what happens to 1,000 students in the future should Meyer's close.”

Namey also noted the district continues to struggle financially thanks to state budget cuts.. He pointed out that the district started the budget process last year nearly $8 million short, and that things aren't much better this year.

Board President Mary Anne Toole recounted the motions made in June – first to close the school, which failed, then to conduct a study of the school. That discussion led to the motion for an internal study that would be done in time to present results for the February meeting.

Director of Curriculum Andrew Kuhl then began talking about splitting Meyer's evenly between the two remaining high schools.

The division of Meyer's students would itself create significant problems if done along geographic lines, Kuhl said. He noted in one grade level, 65 to 75 percent of students would go to one school. Administrator's then tried simply dividing the students equally between schools. “We are able to do this without significant increases” in regular education, Kuhl said, but the difficulty is significant in special education and non-academic classes.. “There would be significant changes in assigning the rooms and room use.

“In Coughlin there would be significant problems int the non-academic classes” such as physical education and home economics at Coughlin High School, Kuhl said. Other problems would develop in the Coughlin cafeteria, which is the smallest of the three high schools.

Kuhl said positives include filling some of the classes more completely at GAR High School, though those classes are already full at Coughlin. But he noted average class size would go to 28 and 29 students in seventh and eighth grades at GAR high school if Meyers were closed, and rise to around 32 at Solomon Plains Junior High School.

      Spread The News

Three more bedbugs were found at two Monroe school buildings and officials said they came from the same homes that caused a similar problem earlier this month.

At Arborwood North, which is the former Hollywood Elementary School at 1135 Riverview Ave., a bed bug was discovered near a child in a kindergarten classroom. It was stepped on and killed.

At Arborwood South, which is the former Cantrick Middle School at 1008 Riverview, two bed bugs were found in the clothing of a student outside the building.

Monroe Public Schools spokesman Bobb Vergiels said in each situation, the bedbugs had 'hitchhiked' from the students' homes. The students and siblings were sent home with a parent.

Mr. Vergiels said the situation involved the same two families that have had a bedbug problem in their homes.

'We are working with local health authorities so the two families' home situations may be addressed,' Mr. Vergiels said. 'We have continued to take precautions … and will continue to be vigilant since the first situation two weeks ago.'

Mr. Vergiels added that by keeping personal belongings in sealed tubs outside when the children are at school actually led to the discovery Thursday. He stressed that the schools are not infested.

Submitted by Cliff Pyron on Thu, 02/16/2012 – 8:37pm.READ MORE: ONLY ON 3: Family says a bed bug infestation put child in the hospital

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) — Residents of a Wilmington apartment complex say it's littered with creepy crawlers. One family living in the Greentree Apartments says their bed bug infestation is a nightmare and even forced them to take their little boy to the hospital.

“They was kind of crawling everywhere and they was real creepy looking,” said Nakisha Myers.

Myers and her cousin Charde Gross moved into the Greentree Apartments just last week. They say after their first night they knew they had a big problem.

“We've been getting bit up,” said Gross. “We've seen bed bugs, roaches, you know stuff is not clean. You know the carpet, it's just not right for somebody to live here like this.”

The problem is so bad that Gross' two-year-old son Marcus had to be taken to the emergency room because of the bites.

“I called the health department, they said take him to emergency,” said Gross' mother Sheron Pierce. “They are treating it with steroids and they said the only thing they can tell us is we needed to vacate the premises because it would be a reoccurring problem.”

Other neighbors were having similar issues.

Myers and Gross say they are so distraught about the experience that they want to move out of their apartment.

After WWAY took Marcus to the management of the apartment complex, they agreed that it is best for the family to move out and agreed to give them a full refund.

An Indiana Children's Hospital has confirmed at least one patient's room is infested with bed bugs, but the parents of the child who spent weeks there are saying the problem is more widespread and that hospital officials refused to take the problem seriously–until the father of the child captured one of the critters.

The father, Michael Wallace and his wife were at the Riley Children's Hospital in downtown Indianapolis for several weeks treating an undisclosed illness their newborn child was suffering from. After the second week, Wallace began noticing red welts up and down his arms and on his fingers.

Puzzled and alarmed, the parents tried to raise the concern, suspecting bed bugs, but were allegedly ignored by hospital officials who insisted on seeing a live bed bug before taking action.

Finally, says Wallace, he was “lucky” enough to catch what he describes as a “grandfather” bed bug crawling down his arm and brought the insect to hospital employees. His family was immediately moved to another room.

The hospital has released a statement addressing the issue, but it's not very reassuring and doesn't seem to address whether the hospital is attempting to gauge the scope of the infestation. Michael Wallace doesn't believe the hospital has taken any action to clean the room he and his family occupied for weeks.

This is an especially difficult problem for a hospital to address as killing bed bugs involves chemicals and pesticides. But the real question is, how could this have happened in the first place?

Tarheel Canine Training, Inc in Sanford NC is providing a grant to a police department with demonstrable financial need, for a free dual purpose narcotic K9, including the dog, training, handler course, and housing during the handler course. Tarheel Canine expects to offer grants to students in their School for Dog Trainers within the next quarter. Tarheel Canine CEO Jerry Bradshaw is a Canine expert with media experience available for expert opinions on all matters relating to dogs, dog training, and police dogs.

Sanford, NC (PRWEB) February 08, 2012

Starting in February 2012, Tarheel Canine’s Police K9 Program in Sanford NC will accept applications for an annual grant for a fully trained dual narcotic police K9. The grant application must demonstrate financial need, the availability to provide a motivated handler, and the reason that a K9 would be put to use in the community. The law enforcement agency requesting the grant must be willing to incur the cost of veterinary upkeep and general care, as well as travel and meal expenses while the handler is in training. Tarheel Canine will not only provide a trained dog, but will provide a 4 week handler school and certification for the K9 team. Requests for grant applications should be sent to Jerry Bradshaw, Training Director, Tarheel Canine Training, Inc.

“This is an opportunity to give something back to the law enforcement community. Budget cuts have plagued law enforcement for the last few years, and times have been tough with manpower shortages and these budget cutbacks often affect K9,” said Bradshaw. “I have had a number of letters from highly motivated officers who want to be in K9, and use dogs in their community, but there just isn’t the money in the budget for it. If we could afford to do more we would, but cutbacks have affected us as well.”

Tarheel Canine provides a vast range of services including a world-renowned School for Dog Trainers, which educates both law enforcement K9 instructors and civilians who want to start a career in pet training. The School for Dog Trainers has produced industry leaders in the canine field around the world, and Tarheel Canine's police K9 training programs are responsible for millions of dollars in contraband seizures and the safe apprehension of numerous dangerous felons. “The reality is, K9 is often the first thing to be cut when budgets are tight, however K9 saves on manpower and duty-hours significantly. A K9 can perform a sniff of a vehicle to locate contraband in the fraction of the time an officer can hand search a vehicle that has been impounded or a house where the officers are serving a search warrant. K9 can quickly locate fleeing felony suspects using their tracking functions, or find a felon hiding in a building, and keep the officers much safer in the process,” added Bradshaw.

Tarheel Canine is also looking to expand their grant program to their school for dog trainers as well, and will announce grants for both law enforcement and civilians to attend the School for Dog Trainers in the coming weeks. “These grants will range from full-ride grants, and partial monetary grants, to free housing grants, to providing needed equipment to attendees of the Tarheel Canine School for Dog Trainers,” said Bradshaw.

Some of the courses offered at Tarheel Canine include: Professional Obedience Trainer (including Behavior Modification), Police K-9 Instructor, Detection Dog Trainer (Narcotics, Explosives, Cadaver, Bed Bugs, Mold, and Termites), Personal Protection Trainer, Search & Rescue Trainer, and Police K9 Supervisor Courses. “We have done a little of everything, from training Military K9 handlers to bed bug detection dog training,” said Bradshaw.

Tarheel Canine is located in Sanford, North Carolina, and has trained K9s and educated K9 instructors for Civilian Security, Police, and Military units in the US, Belize, US Virgin Islands, St. Lucia, St. Vincent, Brazil, Argentina, Barbados, Costa Rica, Malaysia, Thailand, Taiwan, Denmark, Holland, Portugal, and have seminars scheduled for 2012 in Australia, Taiwan, and Costa Rica.

Jerry and his staff have appeared on CNN, Good Morning America, BBC Radio, and have been quoted in Salon.com, and Dog Fancy. Jerry has written for Police K9 magazine, K9 Cop Magazine, and Dog Sport magazine and is a columnist for PoliceOne.com. Jerry Bradshaw is available for interviews for print, radio and television as an expert in the field of canine behavior, training, police and military K9 training and deployment. Jerry has written a book on Police K9 Training titled Controlled Aggression, and it is available from Lulu Press.
